Acne & Self Esteem
One of my really good friends in high school had a lot of problems with acne. I remember that I used to be really sad for her. Her parents bought her a lot of different products to try to fix the problem, so she had tried many different treatments and none really made that big of a difference. Her acne problem was really interfering with her life. She would cry a lot to her parents and her friends and was often in a bad mood.
Because of that we weren’t spending as much time together as we had before. But somehow she seemed to feel a lot better after time passed and I just assumed that she got used to her acne problems and learned to deal with them. But one day she told me what really helped her cope with it and change her attitude about her acne.
She said that her mom one day told her that she needed to just stop constantly thinking about and start thinking about other things that are more important – things like participating in school clubs, in social and service projects, sign up for tutoring the kids in school who struggle academically. As she engaged in all t hose projects she had very little time left to sit at home and dwell on her acne problem, which with time disappeared. I thought that the advice she got from her mother was really great!
